Heroes of Human Rights

solidarityNancy Rourke’s Solidarity

Human right is an important example that has deceived not only me, but also the graduating students of 2015, also it is the failure of higher education in the most cynical, outrageous ways that allowed the keynote speaker, Vinton Cerf to preach hate speech in the eyes of breaking the democracy of a human life. He has breached trust with Deaf community in the most egregious ways. Gallaudet University has utterly failed in the performance of keynote speakers.

December 10th is the date we all must remember for two important reasons. Reverend Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet’s birthday and the International Human Rights Day, and graduating Deaf students are to celebrate the United Nation’s Declaration of Human Rights every day in Gallaudet halls. That is what Rev. Thomas Gallaudet wanted.

The contradiction of this blog post on how hate expressed in the community is the attempt to express a human language that is not matter-of-fact, when I, and my knowledge, and being a survivor of hate speech for years, my own conditioning are matter-of-fact. The high demand to educate about human rights in Deaf America, it is the nature and magnitude of the problem. When you are reading this, share the awareness with your friends, family, lost souls, and whoever they are!

Becoming an activist is very often a passion unlike the selection of advocates. People are often driven to become activists. For some, it is the beauty of the language or the aesthetic grace of an interpretation. For others, it is the love of ASL and pursing meaning from communication and still for others, it is about service to the Deaf community and humankind.

Whatever the reason behind the selection of an activist as a major course of study or career, there are steps to take to ensure that the transition to students how to stand up against hate bias, crimes, literature, speech and eventually “certified” activists are taken with the fewest obstacles possible.

Vinton Cerf presented a damaged prism through which to view the history of Deaf people, his rapid journey through the technology marvels, voyages of exploration and exploitation, all seen from the vantage point of Alexander Graham Bell Association’s effect on the development of genocide makes “entertaining” presentation. Does it wring your neck when you read this? I understand. Protect your Deaf mind!

HUMAN + RIGHTS= ?

In the next five topics, human rights had been developed to solicit discourses, discussions, and dialogues. These concepts that govern my thoughts are not just matters of my intelligence. They also govern the Deaf people in their everyday functioning, down to the most mandate details. Our concepts structure what we see, how we perceive the world, and how we relate to each other as Deaf people. Our conceptual system plays a central role in defining our realities. There is only one way to find out. I hope to share the same inspiration with my readers.

  • Human rights are Deaf people’s principles meaning of understanding reality and communicating that understanding to others.

  • The essence of human rights is understanding and experiencing one kind of thing in terms of another

  • As we make a journey in ignoring human rights, more surfaces are created.

  • Human rights encode our past

  • If the human rights in Deaf community are not strongly present in the media, the young generation of the Deaf will be economically and culturally marginalized.

Vinton Cerf’s Full Text: Gallaudet Graduation 2015

stock-footage-round-magnifying-glass-moves-over-text-projection-on-wall-and-enlarge-words

Vinton Cerf’s full transcript from captions. The time mark begins at 1:59:38. GO!

Members of the board, members of the faculty family and friends and class of 2015, congratulations!

I am sure many of you are feeling a sense of accomplishment and relief. I can assure your parents are probably thinking the same thing.

Many of who live to be 100 years old. You have about 80 years to look forward to. Let’s try to figure out what that might mean.

My mother, Muriel Cerf, was born in 1916 and passed away last year at the age of 98. For her, the telegraph, the telephone, talking movies, mass produced automobiles, radio, the airplane and Einstein’s Theory of Relativity and Quantum Mechanices, the Panama Canal, World War I, and the Great Depression were already in her past. What would she see over the next 80 years? She would experience World War 2, the invention of the computer, radar, rockets, television….well, okay. It was not invented in 1928 but was not widely in use until the 1950s. And microwave ovens.

In her lifetime she would see the synthesis of insulin and the birth control pill, magnetic resonance imaging, the invention of the atomic and hydrogen bombs, she would see the invention of and ride in jet airplanes and watch men landing on the moon and space craft on mars, and other bodies in our solar system. She would see the invention of the internet and the world wide web, she would experience the invention and use of the transistor, mainframe computers, personal computers, laptops, tablets, hand held mobiles and the smart phone.

She would experience the assassination of JFK, MLK, and Robert Kennedy, and the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan. She would experience the Korean war, the Vietnam war, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq would lie ahead of the 20 year old Muriel. Interestingly, the first wearable hearing aid was invented in 1938, when Muriel was 22.

By 1953, the transistor made behind the ear hearing aids possible. I started wearing them in 1956 when I was 13 years old. The 80 year old Muriel would see her daughter-in-law and my wife, Sigrid Cerf, receive her first cochlear implant in 1996 and a second one 10 years later.

It is 2015, you are about to graduate into a world that we can only begin to imagine. What might you experience over the next 80 years? In my own field, it is reasonable to expect that quantum computers will become real, if not necessarily wide-spread use. Minimally-invasive surgery will be the norm for many conditions and nano-scale devices will be reduced to practice. Some may be autonomous and others guided by skillful hands or even robots. Some may even work inside our bodies. Self-driving cars will become commonplace and it might even be illegal for inept humans to drive cars except on specially-designed off road or race tracks! And finally humans will land on Mars and a spacecraft will be on its way to the nearest star system Alpha Beta and Proxima Centauri.

The internet of things is becoming a reality and it will be the norm for you in your lifetime. Wearable computes and sensing devices on or embedded in our bodies will be standard practice. some already are such as the insulin pump, cochlear implant, and video cameras you can swallow. Electronic alternatives to pharmaceutical medicines will be standard options for you during your lifetime. While there won’t quite be Star Trek replicators, 3D printers will be commonplace and spare parts and whole cars will be manufactured on the spot. Stem cell and genetic therapies will almost certainly become commonplace in your lifetimes.

And it is not inconceivable that we will be able to re-grow damaged parts of our bodies and that may include the reconstruction of organs that help us see, feel, or hear. Some of you may well find, yourselves in Earth orbit for a stay in a Virgin Galactic or Bigelow Hotel and you will get there on a commercial space flight offered by Space-X or Virgin Galactic.

I have had the good fortune to experience a career filled with interesting challenges and fascinating ideas. While I was trained as a Mathematician, I soon discovered computers and that led to networking and that led to the internet. I had the benefit of many, many colleagues who felt the same urge I did to connect things that had not been connected before. To erase distance and fashion an ever more interconnected world. I am an engineer by trade. A computer scientist by my degrees. And a Chief Internet evangelist by title. Of course, there are only an estimated 3 billion people on the net today so there are about 4 billion people more to connect. I could use some help.

For the past 40 years it has been my task to convince others that they, too, want everyone on the planet to be part of the internet and the World Wide Web that it supports. Smart mobiles have helped realize that goal with several billion in use today. I see the internet’s success as a lucky confluence of technology. Us and other government leadership and support. Dramatic reduction in the cost of computing and communications. Massive commitment by individuals, research institutions and private sector companies and business models that have attracted persistent investment and the creation of new enterprises. The world of the future is not predictable. Some of you will discover new physical principles. New business opportunities, new ways of living in a world challenged by climate change, persistent, regional conflicts, growing population and demands for natural resources.

It will be a world posing hard problems and dramatic and opportunities for their solution. You will be a part of that world and you will shape it. Your interests, aspirations, creative talents and your desires will influence the markets and products of the future.

By this time, you will have learned that hard work, patience, and persistence really count in the real world. I hope you have also discovered that doing things that you like and are good at makes work seem more like fun and adventure. You hear often that you should discover what trigger your own passion and pursue that in your career. Do not allow others to define who you are or what your limits might be. These are yours and yours alone to discover and to extend.

I wish each and every one of you all possible success. I have good reason for that – I will be living in the world you create. And so will you! Congratulations!

And it concludes at 2:08:43. FINISH!

MY RESPONSE: Teresa Blankmeyer Burke in Defense of Vinton Cerf

lookingI am excited to challenge the only Deaf-signing woman in the world that receives PhD in Philosophy. Her name is Teresa Blankmeyer Burke. She was there at the graduation held at Gallaudet University and admitted that Vinton Cerf did talk about technology, but did not “exhort everyone to get implanted.” I am surprised for someone like her holding the highest honors in Philosophy did not exactly read the lines very well. We cannot ignore the hate speech that is already proved scientifically or verified objectively. So, it is important to put a lot of investment in understanding hate speech. The tools we learn is very crucial for everyone with greater perspective about hate speech and bias, so we can forward with healing to pursue the higher truth and value of Deaf people, no matter what conclusions are. The mockery is gone. Long gone.

There are only two words that are people: survivors and hostages. How can Teresa dare to make personification out of civility, integrity, and truth without elaborating or describing them? Try to imagine who civility is, who integrity is, and who truth is. In Burke’s own words, “That is my observation as well after I watched the video. There is nothing in his presentation that gave any hint of exhortation to anyone. I see him as a technophile who is amazed by all the technologies that we currently have and is very excited to see what the future will bring. I copied two small portions of captions of his presentation that I think where some people misunderstood him. Approximately around 2:04:24: “Wearable computers and sensing devices on or embedded in our bodies will be standard practice some already are, such as the insulin pump, cochlear implant, and video cameras you can shallow.” Approximately around 2:04:58: “Stem cell and genetic therapies will almost become commonplace in your lifetimes and it is not inconceivable that we will be able to re-grow damaged parts of our bodies and that may include the reconstruction or organs that help us see or hear.” I could not find anything in his presentation that is even close to the exhortation. The burden is on those who made such claim to provide the accurate source of where he said that. My theory is that they were afraid of what the future would being (in the sense of technophobe, opposite of him) and saw his presentation through their own anti-cochlear implant lens that led to wildly inaccurate claim.”

WOW! WOW! Now I find Burke not as smart as I thought. I will copy several portions of captions of his presentation that I think where people did not see between the lines. Again, English language can be very tricky. My findings below:

  • “My wife, Sigrid Cerf received her first cochlear implant in 1996 and a second one ten years later. Now in 2015 you are about to graduate into a world that we can only begin to imagine. Notice the word right before this? ‘First cochlear implant…and second one ten years later….into a world that we can only begin to imagine. It means use your best imagination what to hear out there. ONLY WE CAN ONLY BEGIN….
  • “In my own field, it is reasonable to expect that quantum computers will become real. If not, necessarily in wide spread use. Minimally invasive surgery will be the norm for many conditions and nano-scale devices will be reduced to practice. Some may be autonomous and others guided by skillful hands or even by robots. Some will work inside our bodies. The key is “minimally invasive surgery will be the norm for many conditions.”—Many conditions means to wipe the condition of Deaf world. The second key is that “some will work inside our bodies” suggesting cochlear implant will work inside our ears. Is the ears part of the bodies? You decide.
  • “The Internet is becoming a reality and it will be the norm for you in your life time. Wearable computers and sensing devices will be standard practice some already are. Such as the insulin pump, cochlear implant, and video cameras you can shallow.” Cochlear implants are the reality that people need to shallow. Sensing devices are the part of encouraging getting cochlear implants.
  • “It is not inconceivable that we will able to re-grow damaged parts of our bodies and that may include the reconstruction of organs that help us see feel or hear.” It is easy to know what it means when someone says “re-grow damaged parts of our bodies”—re-grow ears are part of the bodies!
  • Some of you will discover new physical principles….” Hmmm. That is very tricky. Isn’t physical principle part of eradicating Deaf and learn to be hearing again? Deaf people have principles to protect their constitution rights.

From I had learned through my academic experience, it is best to stop any demonstrating troublesome and potentially harmful behaviors. When people practice any behavior, for example, hate speech, that behavior becomes stronger and harder to get rid of. In our human minds, we see a person of different culture walking past the street, and people sneer at them. They then become invariably disappears. To the human mind, the awareness works. To a slightly anxious people who did not take full responsibility to stop any kind of hate, and to a very anxious person like Alexander Graham Bell, Aristotle, Dimity Dornan, Karl White, William House, Vinton Cerf, many more, this completely reinforces the idea that hate speech makes scary things go away.

The goal is to teach people awareness that people should not be harmful and to substitute other behaviors, such as relaxing (at home), or paying attention to you. It is vital that you manage the environment to prevent this from happening. Do not allow people to spend time with haters unsupervised, where they can see outside, access the door, and criminalize at passersby. We would like to change people’s emotional reaction, as well as their behavior, when they seems different people on the walk. To do this, they must be comfortable—not making hate comments, literature, or speech that can constitute a hate crime. They will have to make judgment calls about which people they think they will react to, but err on the side of caution. We already know what they are more likely to react to people in hoods or carry backpacks.

That is my two cents. Share the truth! It is important to use your knowledge to recognize your civility and the truth wins with the most powerful integrity as possible. Philosophy holds the most noble thinker—try to read the lines better next time. Socrates, the most wisest thinker of all time would drink some red wine celebrating the civility, integrity, and truth that Deaf people do not need cochlear implants.

A Perfect Mask of Benevolence: Vinton Cerf’s Ideology

Eugenics

The image is what exactly happened yesterday. Click the image. Go ahead.

Today is the day after shock wave in the Deaf community—Vinton Cerf joins the ranks of all-time hate bigots along with Karl White, Dimity Dornan, Alexander Graham Bell and many more. Hate is a reasonable to many discriminatory interactions with Deaf people, so one must be prepared to forestall or deal with such a reaction. Realizing hate bigots are the problem, Cerf tries to stay in control and handle eugenics-oppression style by making it clear to those Deaf people who would mistreat Cerf that doing so carries with a significant cost for them.

Whether anxiety over societal change preceded or even gave birth to anxiety over intellectual change, or whether the opposite is true, is less important than the fact that, during Culture Wars, these two anxieties become grafted onto each other—to such an extent that it is in general impossible to define the point where one type of anxiety ends and another begins.” –Joan DeJean, Ancients against Moderns: Cultural Wars and the Making of a Fin de Siele

The graduation at Gallaudet University is a historical ceremony for each graduates—no consequences are allowed. Cerf was attempting to propose a cochlear implant wave in which those Deaf-ASL users are encouraged to act like hearing people for his own intrinsic satisfaction of higher learning. In the other words, within with university, throwing eugenics-theme speech is of a central importance. With high technology activities to make a final decision to support the eugenics of Deaf people, Cerf began the hate speech cycle right there. I got attacked being called a liar and asked to see the proof of his transcript. One of them who own a writing service asked for it rather believing the person who threw eugenics in our face instead of reading it from Deaf author like myself. Just because Cerf is the father of Internet and it would be impossible for a celebrity to say that. What does that tell you? IT WAS ACTUALLY HAPPENED WHAT VINTON CERF SAID!

Those who wrote trash have acted in direct contravention of values that we, as DEAF people who love this world, hold dear. It has been absolutely astounding how they have committed the most horrendous acts, causing needless tragedy in the lives of Deaf people, yet they wear their so-called I-am-better-than-you nonsense. Their hypocrisy is mind-boggling — and disgraceful.

Gallaudet University happens because Deaf people exist. Cerf knew about the success that needs to change to help cochlear implant makers rich and make Cerf getting some commission profit for implementing in his presentation. It is no seldom accident, folks! It is easy to recognize product of strained leadership. A skilled Sociologist would understand the propaganda what it would be like.

For example, Cerf is well-known Alexander Graham Bell donor, and he went ahead and used hate speech that become necessary because it is fun to deliberately confound Deaf people with the unknown and keep Gallaudet University to maintain the status quo, ensuring Deaf people remain disempowered while Vinton Cerf entertain a hate speech.

Some people would say that it is a degree of freedom of speech, but within certain demographics it has overwhelmed the old Gallaudet politics, before cochlear implant center set up there on the same building where ASL/Deaf Studies department is. I think that hate speech should be pretty much extinct at Gallaudet University, in the sense that Gallaudet is quite welcoming to anyone Deaf. That has not always been true. Audism and hate speech exists in the term of higher education at Gallaudet University.

I became highly disturbed by his presentation about restoring Deaf people to hearing people. It has been ongoing ill-advised and misleading term. No human being can restore anyone’s hearing; they can only amplify it. When batteries expire, Deaf people merges as an inevitable—a reality and Cerf refuses to accept the fact that the high technology is not always a reality. Clearly, everyday hate speech especially stereotyping and prejudice—makes little or no sense, in terms of either reason ore religion.

With the EPHPHATHA official seal of Gallaudet University on the podium before Cerf stood and spoke, is the best example of mask of benevolence that it is attributable to implicit efforts in restoring Deaf people to the hearing society. He may be the father of Internet, but promoting hate speech like the big jellyfish just the same as Internet is. No Deaf graduating students deserve the knot with fear in their stomach.

It does seem to me a circle of people, (strong oralists) and some other like-minded folks, like to have Vinton  around them and recognize his habit of badgering and intimidating smaller or weaker people.

Does Vinton Cerf dare to play G-O-D with new tricks front of Deaf people on their very special day? It makes a sad case study for hate speech and oppression. The same guy who invented Internet, of course, generates, with no intention to censor, the greatest noise that yields no information that Deaf people exist.
