AGBell: Time for You to Heal Your Angry Brain

This is one of the most powerful pieces written by EMG. It is a year after infamous Milan Resolution. I will share few of his writing. The grand opening of his article:

“The heated controversies which have been sustained for many years as to the merits of rival methods of instructing the deaf have, in part, grown out of a mistaken idea of classification, and partly out of an imperfect understanding of the capabilities of the person to be taught.”

There is nothing better to write something like this at the grand opening. The rival methods would be between American Sign Language (ASL) and Oralism: Alexander Graham Bell’s favorite work.

EMG writes: “First of all, the class should be always be spoken of as the deaf.”

ASL is the staunch language of the deaf. In that same paper, EMG writes: “when Pedro Ponce de Leon, three centuries ago in Spain, taught children “deaf from birth to speak, to read, write, and keep accounts to repeat prayers, to serve the mass, to know the doctrines of the Christian religion, and to confess themselves viva voce.

Today in 2019, Alexander Graham Bell’s doctrine continues to teach Deaf children to speak and collect all accounts by Oralism methods to remember his legendary to serve the master and give him the power to control ASL in the name of authority.

EMG writes: “Other teachers meeting with pupils who could not master speech have accounted for their failures in various ways, many most unjustly assuming that all who failed to acquire the power of vocal utterance were deficient in intellect;”

We all know that AGBell’s Oralism practices very much the power of vocal utterance has failed for years including 2019. Because we all know that ASL is WAY MUCH INTELLECT language. That’s too bad that the truth still hides in the dark. We know that ASL is the human brain that will never be defective with the final written statement by EMG:

“Defective brain power,” referred to by Mr. Kinsey, must not be understood to mean only imbecility, for the term is applicable to imperfect or weak memory, lack of the imitative faculty, slowness of apprehension, nervousness, and other conditions familiar to those who have had to do with the deaf.”

It is not hard to know that AGBell’s national emergency: his own defective brainpower. He is still exploiting ASL and the Deaf even in the future. It starts with us that we can stop his future.

ASL changes our lives, as we cannot deny this in our painful journey where we were once survivors of AGBell’s hateful practices. ASL is more successful more than anything, and will need each other to achieve our goals.

In Deaf community, AGBell’s brainpower is the national emergency in order to bypass ASL and fund a powerful Oralism than ever, and it is only beginning that we are starting to learn that how badly AGBell has been messing the Deaf community up. Today, we are asking you to make a choice.

Within two critical priorities, which would, best for Deaf community, and your choice is to eliminate one.

Recognizing ASL to carry that intelligence to pass on to futurism.

Criminalizing ASL to support Alexander Graham Bell’s legacy.

Dealing with Plantation Mentality. WHY?

Mainstream Surdophobia

Bullying is number one. In schools bullying against Deaf children in mainstreaming schools is number one. This notion is that media is making surdophobia more normative.

Alexander Graham Bell [AGBell] lobbied for measures to dehumanize Deaf people and created a space for language bigotry because Deaf people seek for constitutional rights—AGBell twisted “constitutional rights”—denying American Sign Language as a constitutional right. Oppression is the systematic repression of a human being.

There are countless examples of how severe oppression affect Deaf community each day. Deaf people are in minority group, when the minority stays in their place—everything is OK, but when the minority takes their stand—problem comes. For example, you are Deaf and that leads to justification for crime because the person is now dehumanized. How do Deaf people help Deaf people get out of world of oppression?

Instructors of the deaf, so far as possible, should be in full possession of all their faculties…The percentage of deaf teachers employed has steadily decreased, and must decrease still further to a very great extent on account of the increasing attention paid to articulation teaching…The employment of deaf teachers is absolutely detrimental to oral instruction……” -Alexander Graham Bell, 1881. AGBell was the bully culprit. He converted his prejudice into a hateful manner, Bell talked about Deaf people, overcompensating or making assumptions about them as a whole, which can be just as prejudiced as outright bigotry.

Bell’s mission was a personal one that borders on the political as well: the ideology how to oppress over Deaf community in America, and Bell’s anxious hopes for teaching people oppress towards Deaf people. The main point of oppression is working too hard to pretend to understand Deaf people is as bad as being ignorant of it in the first place.

Many people automatically assume certain things on a bigotry level, such as Deaf people that they are predominately “bad people”.

A Witch Hunt: America 1883

Over the last couple of years, I have been meeting some of Deaf people who were colonized by Alexander Graham Bell’s witch-hunt. Words are too great to describe. The practices of Alexander Graham Bell Association bring in the climate of environmental hate. After reading a book, The Colonizer and the Colonized written by Albert Memmi for my Methodology of the Oppressed class in 2011, that day I remember sharing with the class about AGB’s speech in 1883:

Those who believe as I do, that the production of a defective race of human beings would be a great calamity to the world, will examine carefully the causes that lead to the intermarriages of the deaf with the object of applying a remedy.”

One of the classmates I never met before said, “It is the problem that AGB lack human-consciousness.” and that was probably best answer I’ve seen from a hearing ally. Their attitudes do serve to juxtapose the consumptions of Deaf people to that of the inhabitants of Americans; however, I think a further look could possibly be taken.

Within millions of potential allies in America, how is it not possible to see people curb their ignorance about hate crimes? Is it because the Deaf people have a tendency towards more Deaf-centered way of life? The quality of hate depreciation is also real.

Where are hearing allies? We need more allies. The classmate whom I also never met before as well, came up to greet herself and said that she read a book, “When the Mind Hears: A History of the Deaf, one of Harlan Lane’s books for her ASL class years ago in California. The teacher was wise to recommend the book even though it was not required for the class. “Recommend Reading” really makes all the difference. Thank you!

This line and many other examples in media and print reminds me of a Rubik’s cube that finds with hearing allies and those without, as if Deaf people gain a higher sense of self in their differences. We need more hearing allies to pass national hate crime law that targets Deaf people. After all, we need a big group of stronger human consciousness, too.

Friday, April 14th evening, there will be a vigil held at Gallaudet University around Laurent Clerc bust to share their stories what they experienced Audism in their lives.

Powerful Diversion in Deaf Community

Deaf against Deaf that causes diversion in our combustible present, we all need to reframe the conversation about pain we must continue to have, chronicling the powerful forces that have long oppressed progress in Deaf community.

The problem is that the majority of Deaf people do not know what 8th Amendment in the United States Constitution stands for. At the same time, the 8th Amendment was, in important ways, lacks greatly in Deaf community to hold the truth to be self-evident that exposed Deaf to Deaf to be extralegal violence and widespread violence.

Deaf against Deaf as the enemy makes for a failure of humanity. In May 2015, I wrote a post, For Your Eyes Only: HATE is Real

I am talking to you. DEAF to DEAF. You and I have the same identity: DEAF.

HATE—we have been led to believe that it does not exist in our life. Hate produces ignorance, discrimination, and prejudice. We know some Deaf who rejects being DEAF, deny American Sign Language and their signed languages as languages and culture….

Is it time to support DEAF community and stop hate speech? We all know what Audism means. Is it also time to advance our knowledge that hate speech actually exists in our life?

Is America Surdophobia? Gary van Gils, a social worker who lives in Holland and is highly respected as Deaf Studies lecturer, coined it. The term is well defined academically and it makes sense to me. In the meaning of Surdophobia, “a hostility, intolerance, or fear against Deaf people, Deaf culture, and the Deaf community and that resistance toward the sign languages used. It can consist of a range of negative attitudes toward Deafhood, the idea of Deafpositive and Deaf rights.”

It was 1880. The infamous Milan Conference—the world’s original sin in the midst of global language war to make Deaf community suffer in its horrors. Alexander Graham Bell, the original sinner is the story of America to begin hate. It is foundational.

AGBell dominated lives of Deaf people in America from his hate speech in 1883 and 1884 well into the 20th century. From hatred to coffin, there was no nook of a Deaf person’s life that it did not touch.

Today, Deaf people suffered the most: Employment, higher education, and the rights to the pursuit of happiness for ALMOST 10 decades—10 decades! Both of your hands in FIVE. The same states had constantly failed to provide good jobs and treat Deaf people “equal”—where is the Achilles heel that National Association of the Deaf (NAD) stand up and sign out? It is not enough. NAD is the oldest Civil Rights organization in the United States of America.

For example, how come Gallaudet University did not equalize enough educational opportunities and did not finance, create, and maintain law degrees and doctoral programs in Sociology?

Today, Gallaudet University is still not Deaf-centered, Deaf-controlled, and Deaf-oriented campus. The Deaf President Now (DPN) in 1988 was so much more than everything. The biggest mistake is to allow hearing students at Gallaudet in early 1990’s. That is why it is also much diversion in Deaf community.

DPN was a series of hard-fought, locally and nationally organized campaigns, shining the lights of the media to challenge hearing privileges and employment that hearing people took away from Deaf people who are highly qualified for the jobs.

Also, DPN skillfully used the media to expose the horrors of overt discrimination, Audism, and hatred they experienced from hearing people to the world. That was the soul of America. It saddens me to see that Deaf against Deaf. How can we make it feel like 1988?

Suing AGBell and its Enablers

Few years ago, I was reading a book: Animal Farm by George Orwell, a British writer—the story is about the oldest pig on the the farm, his name name was Old Major—had to call out all the animals to a secret meeting and telling them about his dream of a revolution against the cruel Mr. Jones; After Major dies a few days later, his speech gives the more intelligent animals a new outlook on farm life. Pigs and pigeons play major roles in charge of the farm.

Animal Farm is one of the greatest analogies for anyone who is part of AGBell survivors—where we all need to go through rebellion to have AGBell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to be shut down. Forever. AGBell survivors had been hurt over and over through hatred and bigotry—and what is it that stands between AGBell survivors and them that such a proposition would loose in the mind and body of a person who believed that ASL is not important anymore. The letter by Meredith Sugar was deeply dismayed, concerned, and even frightened, the ongoing and escalating crisis by AGBell survivors could be. It is very important that AGBell survivors is up to par with current events affecting all of us frightfully.

Ever since April 1st letter by Ms. Sugar, in the Deaf community, we have witnessed our democracy in process that met with unnecessary hate crime and bigotry. That was how we would always remember about our experience through AGBell lies; Today we can walk far in the company of intellectual people and stop AGBell’s hatred and intellectual oppression either exalted or scorned.

The reason for the latter attitude is that the term “oppression” has always carried the scent of impropriety of ASL discourses in Deaf community. We all need to share our personal and professional experience in this healing process. We also need to depend on each other to heal. In healthy discourses, we MUST not loose our sight of the value of it—the form of healing that is not only healthy but important vital for the well-being of AGBell survivors and the maintenance of Deaf community today and tomorrow across America and around the world.

It is important to take a look at this way. Wal-Mart has been sued 4,851 times in year 2000 (The picture attached below)—about once every two hours. Wal-Mart has billions of dollars. They have insurance. Even there are people who actually worship Wal-Mart—way powerful than a bible. No, I am not kidding about this part.

There are roughly between 400,000 and a million ASL users in America (most recently I attempted to look at Gallaudet Research Institute [GRI] and saw what Schein and Delk old study back in 1974—400,000 ASL users, but someone informed me that today it might be up to a million ASL users. Again, no hard numbers). —who knows that most of them might be AGBell survivors—imagine if Deaf community take action to sue AGBell—every minute of it for 365 days of living through AGBell lies, hatred, bigotry, language hegemony, the list goes on—how come AGBell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing has not sued or anyone ever done this before? Insurance? Strong sound-oriented country?

We could create a CLASS SUIT and shut down AGBell—not only that but the telephone company, cochlear implant companies, and all that hate groups who are in the same boat as AGBell stakeholders. They do not have much money like the Daily Moth has showed the Deaf community how much AGBell really made—very poor financial management—a weak link.

Imagine sharing your concerns with AGBell, the Deaf survivors like yourself who to listen to you with respect. Imagine how you would feel about yourself if you could call them for guidance, insight, and perspective when you need it. Is this gonna happen? You decide. Wake up! Do we really have this kind of imagination today? AGBell Board of Directors is powerful in the human psyche and its hatred psyche, too. Indeed, at this level of archetype, they have failed to live within our imagination now.

In fact, one of the things I have admired most about AGBell survivors telling their stories, writing letters, and all that is its embrace for change. It teaches us to look to the work we can do on ourselves—repair, maintain, build and grow—so we can better deal with change that is certain to come. Growth may mean that AGBell survivors must be the one who to proactively instigate change that is long overdue.

AGBell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is now ready to be shut down for greater good and gives us the change and grow. We have memory, we have history that gives us remembrance that AGBell begun hatred and bigotry in 1883—the history is our strength that is deeply rooted in our sense of place. Its lesson is not to be a survivor of change inflicted upon AGBell; We are the ones to instigate the change that is beneficial, the change that holds merit of ASL and Deaf culture today and tomorrow.
