“Retarded” Stigma in American Culture

trump-bully-450.jpg

Donald Trump called Marlee Matlin “retarded”—a derogatory term in broadest human mind. That makes Trump a deficit thinker and a bully, too. The proof of torture and cruelty on Deaf people is overwhelming and incontrovertible. detailing an unlawful practice that was far more brutal and unnecessary than previously known.

Among the abusive tactics by Trump on many people has forced stressed positions, torturing and depriving Deaf people’s civil rights which has resulted in long-last psychological pain and suffering—in addition to deal with emotional trauma is the most dangerous thing when they were growing up and deal with bullying in schools. The link would be helpful to read:

Mr. Donald Trump is entitled to a full, public accounting of the torture and cruelty done in his name and the consequences of his actions. I write upon to write this and stop hate-motivated attitude toward Deaf people who work hard to change their lives around to destigmatize them as Deaf people. No more “retarded”—Deaf people are still the most marginalized group practiced by torture and abuse and should not be subjected to harsh conditions.

“Retarded”—is also a hate speech then his behavior becomes weak. In our human minds, we see a bully walking past the street, and the bully sneer at us, then will become invariably disappear. To our human mind, the awareness works. The goal is to teach people awareness who calls Deaf people “retarded” like Mr. Trump did, and it is vital that we need to manage the toxic environment to prevent this from happening.

Hate is about conflict. Conflict with themselves. It shows hate embodied with all of these other personalities; they are faces that seem to struggle with themselves despite being callous to their own experiences. It is a strange paradox that screams out of depth and power in pure, unadulterated self-reflection.

Deaf people who taught how to self-hate for being Deaf even calling other Deaf people “retarded”, it is the most focal key of the invisible hate like a core. Self-hate has scratches all over Deaf people that force the viewers to do two things: recognize the depths in the face and examine the sociological problem. Each scratch has a layer of contrasting pain underneath the first skin layer.

Marlee Matlin do not deserve something like this at all. Shame on Donald Trump!

Gallaudet ASL/Deaf Studies: Deaf Returning Citizen is a Human Right!

asldeafstudies-1.jpg

When I flew with Carl Schroeder and visited Washington, D.C, the home of Gallaudet University for the first time in June 2010—changed my life FOREVER!!! Toward the end of my first meeting with some of ASL/Deaf Studies professors, I was trying to figure out how to overcome my fears and should I join the graduate program. The first person that came out of the room and meet Carl right away was the chair of the ASL/Deaf Studies also one of three founders for graduate program, and Carl introduced me.

The word was that ASL/Deaf Studies department wanted to make bold reforms and Carl sent a text message for the Chair through Blackberry (both had Blackberry) to meet up for a beer along with me that night but the Chair did not respond two days later. He claimed that he was “busy”. His presence was a total snoozer. The usual suspects said the usual things. Nothing new or innovative emerged. Before I walked out of Sorenson Language Communication Center (SLCC), I asked Carl to take a picture of me and knew that it was my calling—Gallaudet is my home!

Then we walked into bookstore to look around for books or stuff whatever we like and see to buy and saw many Deaf people signing and I felt empowered by that moment! That was my adventure and then stayed in the DC greater area for couple of days before returning home in Portland, Oregon. Then I applied for graduate program in 2011 then quickly got accepted in, but I was not ready for couple of reasons: What major informational source does Gallaudet University rely upon to form such hateful, ignorant, and bigoted statements about Deaf returning citizens in general and in specific?

That was one of the reasons I was not ready. So, I gave two years to focus on myself and grabbed all the books I could read about Deaf Studies by going to my favorite bookstore, Powell’s, the best place anywhere in Portland. I would go there every weekend and grab a book and sit in the coffee garden and read there. It was a perfect escape from the reality and read. There were hundreds of different people coming in from the walks of life and some of the people in that coffee garden would have some brightest minds. Not only that but I do my homework there all the time, too.

Then in 2013, Department of ASL/Deaf Studies gave me the ultimate prize: Full scholarship and I accepted the award. The Chair and Dean of the Graduate and Professional Studies Program who is now a Provost approved the letter. Remember, they both are hearing with all the privileges they have. I moved to Washington, D.C. and took the risk. Even my mother warned me that she thought something would happen badly to me. I told my sweet mother, “I have to take the risk because it is the only way I can heal my life”–good enough, my mother was right.

As a Deaf returning citizen, I worked very hard to turn my life around even if it is 30 years ago–unfortunately, I witnessed horrifying mental abuses inside Gallaudet: Chair for Department of ASL/Deaf Studies, Director for Department of Public Safety, Dean of Student Affairs, Dean of Graduate and Professional Programs, Associate Dean of Student Center Programs and Services, ASL/Deaf Studies coordinator, Director of Mental Health Center and even couple of other professors and associate professors.

I was chained to trees and walls. The experience was one of the worst I ever dealt with. Gallaudet University treats Deaf returning citizens like they are in cages, enslaved by chains, and make sure they are all part of dying humanity. They were all attempting to murder my life and made sure I was the laughingstock (a person subjected to general mockery or ridicule) on the campus.

As the academic year opens at colleges and universities across the country, the most hated groups of students will be underrepresented in classrooms: Deaf returning citizens. They had been rejected to show their abilities and the motivation to earn their degrees. They had been shut out of higher education because of their mishaps. It is time to remove the hidden penalty for Gallaudet University to illegally kick them out. They do not need to deal with stigma anymore. It is a mental illness–it is.

Gallaudet University and ASL/Deaf Studies do not support Deaf returning citizens at all. In a meeting in November 2013 with before then Dean of the Graduate Program and the Chair, the Dean signed to me with the Chair being as the strongest witness, “Gallaudet University do not support returning citizens. They are always the worst people on Earth.” I was very surprised what the Dean said and the Chair did not even say anything. The Chair was really scared of his boss.

I was so ready to walk out of the meeting and the Dean signed to me, “Go ahead. I dare you to leave the meeting.” then I realized that I needed to be strong about this. My mistake is that I did not present a lawyer in the Dean’s office. I decided to write this because what I did when I was a 12 YEARS OLD preadolescent was, of course, terrible, it was more than long time ago, 30 years ago. All I want to lead a normal life.

It sends a clear message that bigotry of Deaf returning citizens is allowed at Gallaudet University, now home of mentality plantation. It is also the center of mental condition to make sure Deaf returning citizens suffer with their own stales, socially created traumas, stigmatizations, which had actually destroyed their lives for their own pleasure.

This is only beginning. I have more to write. There are another people that are yet to be named. Those people robbed and destroyed my life. They will deny that the fact that they had done to me. They live in white lies. I was disgusted by those people’s selfish, hate-filled attacks on my life.

That is why I am so ready to tell it all. No more bullshit! The truth will come out. Remember,”dying humanity”–part of my life is all what it matters the most to them.

Yes, Deaf returning citizen is a human right.

34% Is No Joke!

ImageSolitary Deaf Prison by Nancy Rourke

Depression is the inability to construct a future-Rollo May

Psssst. Hey, you. 34% is a lot! For example, “Wilken noted that inmates in segregated housing accounted for 34 percent of all suicides in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Prisoners in solitary are also 33 percent more likely than those in the general prison population to commit suicide, according to the ruling.” and please see the link below at the end of the post.

There is something important that you need to know. Someone has to say it. The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) does not care about it. Everyone at the NAD home office tries very hard not to know it. This 34% claim may seem theatrical, but the odds are stacked in my favor.

Hold on a second, they will probably be thinking by now. Do not single us out. Ignoring Deaf issues is a NATIONAL PROBLEM; Deaf people are angry like zeppelins all over America. The NAD headquarters is located in Silver Spring, Maryland, and they think they are safe and healthy. Deaf people have the birthright of Deafhood. Surely Deaf people are no worse than anyone else. The first president of NAD, Robert MacGregor would agree to it!

I am questioning leadership of the NAD because the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) had an important workshop called “Inmate Calling Services Rates” last Wednesday, July 10th. There was not a single representative from NAD showing up. The NAD has the staff of between 11-13 people ad none of them came to the FCC workshop.

The FCC headquarters is located in Washington, D.C.  Between Silver Spring and D.C. is no more than 30 minutes of driving. The FCC workshop was a public notice. How could they have missed it? True, Deaf issues are all over America, ans the NAD is supposed to be leading “the charge of the brigade” in the United States.

For example, Deaf people suffer the most of any of minority groups when it comes to mental health concerns. From the last time I remembered, 35% of Deaf people do not have an access to counseling. It has become a major concern because counseling is rehabilitating. Presently there are about 500 Deaf people so far who are incarcerated in jails or prisons. Access to such phone services as Video Phone (VP) would save a lot of problems for Deaf people today.

There are many stories that these Deaf inmates are suffering a lot from depression, isolation, mental anguish, anxiety, loss of sleep, physical and mental illness due to the experience. Mental health issues do kill their livelihood any more than people really understand. That is where the money drains. Here is the point: Health-care professionals know that Deaf inmates need to employ American Sign Language (ASL) are uniquely massive with health problems, the question is that why does not the NAD squirm at answering the question: “Why did they not show up at the FCC workshop with care?”

Let’s look at these alarming facts: The Ontario Association of the Deaf (OAD) in Canada has only three people on staff but they sure know how to be in the charge. They would make stops all over Ontario to make sure Deaf people are in good hands. Three people on staff, compared to 11-13 people on the NAD staff. What the heck?! NAD needs to turn off their television and go outside to meet real Deaf people. In the real media world, hearing people would say that Deaf people have a social deviance where hearing people keep on demonizing the Deaf with different points of view. For the sake of Deaf people’s mental health, the NAD needs to leave the home office, to go down the road, to attend a workshop, and to learn something that might make a difference in Deaf people’s lives. It is not healthy to sit inside the home office too much.

The NAD presents a new genre in zombie lore. The NAD’s mission is to imply that another could be gore fest of inexplicably reanimated, undead humans turned monsters feasting off the flesh of the living known as Deaf people. However, the NAD is not really narrative about zombies. Instead, the NAD utilizes the motif of the monster–in this case–the zombie as the metaphor to contrast the vulnerable state of humanity and its pursuit of survival in the collapse of all societal structures. However, the metaphor delves so deeply in the consciousness of physical and psychological reality for the characters in the narrative that it becomes literal. The zombie is no longer a monster, but a conflicted human turned by a societal-borne disease. Where is the NAD’s symbol in their placement between two worlds–the previous world governed by law order of hearing people, and the current world where laws appear meaningless. The NAD represents a moral code that separates the zombie experience from the human experience. The NAD also represents a failure of that moral code to shield humanity from extinction. The failure of government structures and the medical community to quell the zombie pandemic is evidenced everywhere that abandoned Deaf people from real life interaction.

Deaf inmates who are suffering depression while being incarcerated is hard to grasp. The media work very hard at assuring the public that Deaf inmate are dismissed, swept under the rug. Fortunately we the Deaf see these type of stories often enough to read between the lines and know that it is not the case at all. A big charade that goes on behind the thin blue line cannot be ignored! Education is already free. However, Deaf people are not being provided to use VP to make calls to their families, friends, or whoever they call make their lives more harder. The NAD needs to admit that they know that if they do not participate in this important FCC workshop, their attitudes do reflect those Deaf inmates that they may not return to society minimal expectations, then that is what prison becomes useful. While Deaf people are being shut out without providing an ASL interpreter for whatever the reason might be, their social literacy becomes worse. The NAD needs to realize that Deaf inmates are being forced out of education at the greatest cost.

My question is that does the NAD really understand the importance of faith in today’s version of American justice for Deaf inmates and the FUTURE of Deaf America such as freedom of speech and various constitutional rights? 34% of the Deaf inmates are suffering because of the NAD’s lackaday; the NAD does not care about Deaf inmates.
