Christopher Soukup: CEO, Communication Service for the Deaf

“In the collective mind the intellectual aptitudes of the individuals, and consequence their individuality are weakened.”–Gustav Le Bon, La Psycholgie des Foules, 1895

Dear Communication Service for the Deaf (CSD) CEO Christopher Soukup:

Since you are the Mighty Chief of CSD Social Venture Fund (SFV) and the majority stakeholder for National Deaf Therapy (NDT) to invest in business owned by members of the Deaf community, you control the information, using misinformation to shield, and in consequence, as you wrote in June 2016:

“As a not for profit organization, we remain committed to pushing out our resources into the community—in the form of tangible action and new products, programs, and services that make our world a better place for everyone. Careful and responsible management of our resources is an absolute reflection of our integrity and our commitment to you.”

The reflection of integrity and commitment is nothing to replace better than this. Since you put (NDT) in your power, misleading the Deaf community that the message: “Hate is not a mental health issue” is greatly problematic. The hardest part what you wrote: “Careful and responsible management”

There are plenty of valid-proven academic articles by well-versed professors and experts that hate is a mental health issue. Unlock the power of hate and action. For one, NDT argue that it is not a mental health issue differs from, and Deaf citizens punished more severely; because it betrays the expression of ignorance.

On the surface, this appears to be a problematic with significance: Deaf citizens do experience hate, derives from truth, in the same manner as all of us. The language deprivation of “hate”, although intentional, is no less truth.

Deaf people has a deep-longing to live as powerful people, to share their stories within our Deaf community and to make connections because they have suffered an inordinate amount of language deprivation that has left them deeply wounded.

“Hate, it has caused a lot of problems in the world, but has not solved one yet.”–Maya Angelou

Hate: Crime, speech, literature and culture. For example:

Dr. Merzenich in his own reference with the print from American Psychological Association: “The simple fact is that if [American Deaf culture] could be reliably wiped out, it would be a good thing to wipe out. (Fischer & Lane, 1993)

As wiping out the culture, language, souls, and stories is very much part of hate in the broadest sense of mental health issue. The deprivation of truth will affect Deaf people’s usability, life security, and stability, would also affect in higher education. It would take the high road–boldness and healing.

The denial of hate leads to a societal taboo that would reject Deaf people in general. The sociological and punishment as punishing hate articles have plenty of merit that hate is indeed, recognized as mental health issue.

The rule of law whether it lacks the most where it represents the moral view of the Deaf community, is it accurate enough for NDT under your leadership to formally announce that hate is not a mental health issue as it is powerfully damaged, misleading the information and seeing the statement in print is even more painful.

Deaf citizens illustrates the fact they struggle in their own values or liberty that cannot easily reconcile with the community and becomes a difficult time to value their own individualism and self-constructed to begin their journey as survivors of dealing with hate, whether the forms of hate, through self-destructive in attempting to grasp its own path to escape oppressive judgement of systematic oppression to curb their struggles.

Being told by NDT in the direction of your leadership such as careful and responsible management, Mr. Soukup, the only freedom Deaf survivors of hate could reasonably negotiate in their lives was suffering enough pain. The denial of hate as a mental health issue abides by the society customs for the refusal, or flippancy towards, the mental state is severe enough.

Yet, you approved the idea that hate is not a mental health issue clearly a decision making table and decide the best for the Deaf community is questionably concerned lacking compassion and leave the results on the benefits of politics and power. As to put this:

“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”-Jedi Master Yoda

ASL: A Jedi Academy Story

38232d245cba75057f77c077459399c6--star-wars-themed-classroom-star-wars-school-theme.jpg

Happy Star Wars Day!

Sign Wars: A New Hope reminds Deaf community to continue and preserve sign language that ranks as one of earliest, dating to First Deaf Jedi story taught by Master Yoda, the wisest Jedi to train Deaf Jedi how to carry a new hope for Deaf community.

Master Yoda have seen that the sociological fact of a language hegemony in the majority or in the minority has very different effects on Deaf people.

It is amazing that sign languages around the world have taught Deaf people like a Jedi to preserve sign languages to stand against wars staged by Alexander Graham Bell Association and Oralism practices.

Gotcha! I was looking for something simple picture and found this, “Jedi Academy: The Phantom Bully” by Jeffrey Brown. It is a perfect metaphor for Deaf people to be trained by Master Jedi to challenge phantom bullies from Alexander Graham Bell Association. Jedi Academy will always preserve American Sign Language (ASL) and its world’s sign languages, no matter what. ASL is knowledge. Without ASL, no knowledge.

b66450ca86b38cd3c9aa161a9613ec30--star-wars-kids-obstacle-course.jpg

Imagine Yoda would explain to Deaf Jedi(s)—“A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never for attack.”

And that is where Yoda taught Deaf Jedi(s) to stand against hate practices by Alexander Graham Bell Association, “Fear is the path to the dark side…fear leads to anger…anger leads to hate…hate leads to suffering.”

When it is a majority, AGBell take their perspective. They narrow the truth Deaf community seek and how they ignore problems. Ignorance, is one of the most powerful forms of influence in English language.

When Deaf community faced with a minority, Deaf people share their stories to build stronger information and solve problems from the society’s point of view–not only the Deaf community as minority’s point of  view is challenging. It is one thing that Deaf community has been manipulated consciously daily and it is not even fair to them.

It is a problem for the quality of ignorance in society to discuss that applies the quality of the healing. How could ASL make progress toward a finish line if someone kept moving it as they continue to progress Deaf community for communication, information, and knowledge on the success of ASL today and tomorrow?

The upcoming movie will be shown this weekend, “Solo: A Star Wars Story” is showing at movie theaters. It is going to be interesting and exciting movie to watch.

As Hans Solo once said, “You’ve never heard of the Millennium Falcon? It’s the ship that made the Kessel run in less than 12 parasecs.”

Exactly! ASL is the millennium language in less than 12 parasecs! That makes ASL and Deaf community more unique and intellectual discourse to continue hope forever! Once again, thank you, Master Yoda!

Dwight Benedict’s Smirk

8.jpg

It has been really difficult day for me because a year ago today, I was clinically dead for ten minutes on the campus of the world’s famous university for Deaf people, Gallaudet University. In the same room where Dwight Benedict was in, he was walking down the aisle with a smirk because he had the hatred towards me—it was really difficult for me to think that way. How can I forget that? It is impossible to forget something like this.

My story must be seen, written, and examined. I grow tired and sick of people telling me to live in PAST. People do not know my life stories what exactly happened. It has been always HEARSAY. People choose to ignore my stories. Especially when a lot of people do not know the facts cannot comprehend what they were listening or do not care what the facts are and make up their own stories.

-11.jpeg

Do you think it was professional of Dwight to smirk when someone else is dead? Many of faculty members witnessed in that room what Dwight did and would vouch for me whenever I need support. He is still walking around campus with power and the same smirk he carries.

When you see the statue of Laurent Clerc on Gallaudet campus, this is one of the most iconic symbols of America—a beacon of hope and acceptance for Deaf people everywhere. So how did coming to Gallaudet University become a crime? Deaf returning citizens are bad news! Make them suffer! Give them the death stare!

If we look at the history of Dwight Benedict’s bullying tactics for the last 37 years, being “Deaf returning citizen” usually just means being “unwanted” and more often than not, that has to do with ignorance and hatred. There are plenty of widespread insecurities at Gallaudet University. As an intellectual community, we the Deaf now seem to exist in permanent fear of the oblivion in the top university leadership, worrying about whether we can survive Dwight’s leadership.

At the same time, at Gallaudet University, we the Deaf appear uncomfortable with the hatred of Dwight’s leadership. The same leadership, so often the means to our advancement, now finds itself under a cloud of power that it falls under a wrong agenda. Disenchanted with Dwight’s past history yet fearful of our future, why are Deaf people—especially people of color and marginalized group struck in Dwight’s leadership where a mood of fear, hatred and low expectations influence our discussion and discourses on many fronts—where our higher education continues to be seen as the problem rather than the challenge.

I worked extremely hard to change my life around and I made an ultimate goal to be a professor. I even made name tags as a personal identification when I arrived in DC and put it around my neck to remind myself. I was so determined more than anything.

-2.jpeg

This irrational insight against the grain of oppressed Deaf people on the campus, which teaches that hatred and bullying by Dwight does not lack human compassion. Deaf people in their struggle for social justice—are ignored because Dwight gets away with it. There have been many stories from Kendall Green about Dwight’s 37 years of oppressive leadership. A great many of damages were done, and many Deaf people were hurt.

My constitutional rights has been violated of due process and amounts to Cruel and Unusual Punishment, Eighth Amendment under United States Constitution and Dwight made it very difficult for me to receive higher education and set me up for harassment, public humiliation and bullying long after I served my time.

In February 27, 2014 meeting I was in, the most oppressive meeting ever I experienced in my entire life, he loved the idea very much where his buddy, Ted Baran, Director for DPS whom Dwight calls Ted in the meeting, “Ted is a good man” front of four other people brought up that I must be required to notify my graduate cohort, and walk around the entire Gallaudet campus and must tell everyone why I was jailed for with ugly labeling on my forehead. I was shocked. I already experienced humiliation and harassment at times when I would be at Gallaudet. No doubt, Dwight Benedict opened my old wounds. Dwight and Ted acted as Judge, Jury, and Executioner. The bald faced truth is that they should held accountable.

-12.jpeg

Even though it has happened 30 years ago, still, I am set up for extreme public shaming and harassment. I had been a good returning citizen more than 20 years and paid no more than $80,000 in counseling and worked very hard to change my life around and graduated even though I had been experiencing thousands and thousands of times being humiliated in my life. I’ve dealt with hearing counselors who do not understand my journey as Deaf person. I realized it was total lie and waste of money and time. Until I found Deaf-centered counseling, I cried and….

il_570xN.819357901_ncwa.jpg

Did I deserve “scarlet letter” for the rest of my life? Am I allowed to become a productive member of society? I am really sick of people telling me to live in the past and live with the stigma. Horrible lies about me, making me look really bad and I lost almost everything. It’s really hard for me. I cry. I cry. I cry. I suffer more. I suffer more. I suffer more.

Dr. Pernessa Steele, author of “Stand Up to Stigma: How We Reject Fear and Shame” writes: “Stigma” is a simple two-syllable word, yet it carries the weight of negative and often unfair beliefs that we hold about those who are different from us. Stigmas lock people into stereotyped boxes and deny us all the right to be our authentic and whole selves.

-10.jpeg

I already had been ostracized from Gallaudet community. Dwight made sure to do more harm than good, with my commitment to turn my life around. I lost my scholarship, I lost my dream job, I lost networking opportunities, I lost pretty much everything and I became the scapegoat on the campus. That is exactly the cruel and unusual punishment. That was the sign of death.

When I woke up on the floor that day, I cried. I still remember being carried out of the room on the emergency stretcher and saw people hand waving at me and I put both of my thumbs letting them know that I’m still strong. Then I was rushed into emergency surgery and carried to an intensive care unit (ICU). The television on right side was turned on—and the presidential election results were still pending.

The worst part was….I was still in extreme shock wondering how I survived from massive heart attack. The election results—did not finalize until 3 AM and became even more heart-broken that Trump was elected. The rises of hate crimes begun. Then I finally fell asleep for only three hours until the nurses woke me up and said, “Time for injections”—my first reaction when I woke up hoping it was only a dream. Only I find it was not a dream. I stayed in the hospital for ten long days. Longest stay in my life.

Do you all remember how you felt when you woke up on November 9th of 2016 morning?

Many people who walked around from Gallaudet University have caught up and suffered in the idea that Dwight thinks he is always right, and that the way Dwight acts is best. But he was wrong in Gallaudet University. What happened with the due process? Why I was not informed with required due process?

Due process means that Gallaudet University cannot give me a serious punishment, like suspension or expulsion, without first having followed fair procedures to determine if I am “bad news”. Fair procedure would include: telling me exactly what I was “bad news”, telling me exactly what the punishment will be, and giving me a chance to tell my side of the story before punishing me. If Gallaudet chooses to punish me, it must punish all others the same. I was never given a chance to do due process. I felt numb.

When I woke up from death, some people who are loyal to Dwight, told me to shut up and stay in silence. Right now Dwight is walking around freely with a smirk and will not apologize for his actions what he had done. It was the most incompetent decision Gallaudet University chooses to keep Dwight in his office. I was targeted by Dwight’s openly discriminatory policies and the discriminatory policies will be always remembered for abuse of power and corruption on the wrong side of professionalism.

For the last 365 days since my death, I wonder if I actually die, the truth would not be seen.

On November 8, 2016, in SAC 1011, the event, “Deaf in Prison Screening & Discussion” sponsored by Gallaudet ASL & Deaf Studies, the very same department I was part of which was very ironic, and the reason they sponsored this because Dirksen Bauman wanted to do this to cover his ass. Complete bullshit. I asked a question for the audience that will be always remembered for long time, “Why Gallaudet University promote FEAR targeting Deaf returning citizens?” and Dwight was in the same room standing in the back giving me a death stare and that was where I had massive heart attack. Dwight was walking down the aisle—slowly and a smirk. Cool, huh?

My death experience has made me stronger than ever. I recently learned that there has been some “talk” around Gallaudet campus that Dwight might retire early—well, there is no way he would walk away with it. My death does not give him full satisfaction and sit in the sun with a smirk. Will Dwight ever experience death for ten minutes and wake up and realize that he is asshole? It was all about personal attack against me as a motivation to new heights of fervor. Master Yoda said: “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”

Sound Wars: The Force Awakens

IMG_1477.JPG

“Ow, ow, OW! On my ear you are!”- Master Yoda

In 1984, the first cochlear implant surgery has been approved, arguing that the sound-oriented is more important than sight-oriented. In 1970, Milton Friedman wrote a famous essay for the New York Times Magazine, pushing that “there is one and only one social responsibility of business—to use its resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game, which is to say, engages in open and free competition without deception or fraud.”

Since 1984, the Friedman point of view prevailed; the job of a corporation is to serve its shareholders. Although what the cochlear implant makers are doing is illegal, Audism, and forced labor persists in many forms around the world. Many cochlear implant corporations are not aware of these facts and enforce codes of conduct at industries around the world through regular monitoring. They did not follow human rights groups, and actively seek to find the root causes of these abuses. There are certain services so vital to the human rights where Deaf people choose to have right to be Deaf in our society that they do not controlled by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA is our criminal justice system is perhaps the easiest target on Deaf people.

The largest of cochlear implant companies are privately traded, meaning that ordinary investors, including mutual funds, participate in their growth, vote on governance matters, and generally align themselves with their oppressive long-term success. The vision of Sorenson Language Communication Center (SLCC) at Gallaudet University where they mix with departments in there—with one of the most crucial department that serve Gallaudet very well. It is well-known controversial department on campus: ASL/Deaf Studies Department. There is a cochlear implant center inside the same building—on second floor where they map cochlear implant users—making a lot of money to finance Gallaudet University today. There are plenty of ignorant people who think that it is no use to bear a dead horse because embracing human rights includes deficit thinking. Well, let’s tell them that deficit thinking is not the pursuit of happiness. The toughest part is that the deficit is neither a half full cup nor half empty one and it does not hold water well.

Cochlear implant center inside SLCC—there is no curriculum anywhere that includes objectives and result goals for deficit thinking. There is no educational research that taps into someone’s talent in deficit thinking. Nor is there an university like Gallaudet that bestows an honorary degree upon someone for deficit thinking. You see, it is a fact that deficit thinking is abnormal and it is not a choice. It is all about following the legal obligations to their shareholders and is driven by the pressures of the private markets to increase their profits—they do not care about Deaf people. Period.

Gallaudet University was built in 1864–—16 years before 1880 Milan Resolution, an iron-fisted, anti-sign language proposal passed by the International Congress of Educators of the Deaf. The proclamation went to all government agencies and schools for the Deaf to stop using sign language for Deaf people. The proclamation’s most controversial provisions make it a shame to use ASL in the United States and most Canada that time, and it still does in America. Something obviously is not right within the Deaf world. We are listening to things and could feel the panic. And we know the cause was 1880.

The importance of ASL among people, Deaf Studies department at SLCC and the surge of energy and affirmation that spreads through the Deaf community can be a joy to behold. The thrust that energizes these users of ASL and Deaf Studies opens social consciousness sends thrills to open doors. Aren’t we all going to experience it? Why not? The hardest part is that the innocence and transparency are essentially Deaf virtues—by which we use ASL and realize that we can use it because we are not guilty of fundamental language bigotry. Cochlear implant does not carry information, knowledge, and communication, which is the greatest trait of all. That is an enormous societal problem—at SLCC. These people at SLCC are suffering a lot.

“Hmm In the end, cowards are those who follow the Dark Side.”

If Gallaudet Wrote Star Wars: Jedi Bell Return

tatooine.jpg

A long time ago in galaxy far, far away…

There is a secret document that has been sealed inside Gallaudet University so deep enough to bury the hatchet—it is like the Federal Bank of New York on the behalf of Federal Reserve System. They hold the gold in there—they act as the guardian and custodian of the gold on behalf of account holders, which include to U.S. government—official organizations.

Gallaudet University is a property of U.S. government and home to many official organizations. Therefore, Gallaudet is home to Alexander Graham Bell Association, an official organization. AGB acts as the guardian and custodian of the Deaf oppression. Have you ever seen a Gallaudet president talk about Racism front of the world before our eyes before? How many Gallaudet presidents combined in total before Bobbi Cordano? I am not talking about text messages, but I am talking about a real-time video—the mother of Truth. That is the first time ever what a Gallaudet-elect president said that. That is history in the making, folks!

This is but one truly social problem, and that is educational ignorance. Whether or not the world has three dimensions, whether the mind has nine or 12 categories, games are to be played. Racism does not including stories, one must first answer! Gallaudet University was built in 1864 for Deaf people first like Tatoonie with the picture above—where it had begun for Deaf people first. Same concept.

Alexander Graham Bell once said, “When one door closes another door opens, but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.” Have you ever seen a picture of Alexander Graham Bell and a Black Deaf student together anywhere? No pictures can be found. It is important to know that Bell did write a memo (letter-alike) to Francis Galton in Britain who coined Eugenics informing him that AGB follows Galton’s philosophy then becomes a honorary president of the Second International Congress of Eugenics a year before his death. People look up to AGB as Jedi of Deaf people—the problem, Jedi was supposed to be good people.

IMG_1429.JPG

Darth Vader was a Jedi before the Dark Side took over his life—and AGB went into Dark Side and fooled many people including Deaf people.

Eugenics influences Racism—a learned behavior in higher education. Galton then writes a letter in return on his paper, “Hereditary Deafness” on his review of Bell’s Upon the formation of a deaf variety of the human race in a 1885 magazine—Review in Nature, Vol: 31, Pages 269-70. The opening paragraph:

The startling title of Mr. Graham Bell’s admirable memoir is fully justified by its contents.

Finally, in late 2015, President-elect Bobbi Cordano shares her greatest concerns after being invited to be part of town hall by Black Student Union listening to stories about oppression, internalized oppression at best. Bobbi would like to stop Racism and systematic discrimination as long as Alexander Graham Bell’s name is out of the Gallaudet campus. AGB’s systematic discrimination practices Audism, the favorite cousin of Racism. The quote by AGB makes a perfect example why Gallaudet has ignored Racism for so long by allowing that happening inside the door being closed and opens to Racism any time they welcome so regretfully upon the door that white supremacy still practices at Gallaudet. Is that why they do not want us to see the ones, which open for us?

Now I can broach the notion of intellectual oppression at Gallaudet University. There is a real change. It has already felt what solution might be given. At this point the problem is reversed. It was previously questioned of finding out whether or not Racism appears a problem. It now becomes clear, on the contrary, that Racism is or not. Watching the campus unrest at Gallaudet University, a particular fact, is acknowledging it fully. Now, no one will live in this fact, not recognizing it to be important, unless AGB goes away.

It is not just about color skin, but it has a lot of codes in language racism and multicultural competence. For example, a provost would say, “I AM GALLAUDET! I AM GALLAUDET! I AM GALLAUDET!” using political power on a Deaf student in a private meeting is considered Racism. There is a star out in the far galaxy that actually named after Deaf person.

No kidding! His name is Oliver Heaviside, an electrical engineer, mathematician, and physicist from 1850s from England. He invented several mathematical techniques to seek for the solution of differential equations and coined Electromagnetic eight terms. Deaf people do not need to suffer anymore and throw Jedi Bell into the Death Star for once and all. Bell is a death star to Deaf people’s Star Wars. Darth Vader would fry Bell like Vader did to Palpatine, also known as Darth Sidious, who planned to overthrow the Republic and the Jedi Order from with.

Being an ally to people of color in the struggle to end racism is one of the most important things that Gallaudet University needs to do that. Can there at least healthy way to be an ally? Racism needs to be overthrown out of Gallaudet University and the Jedi Order of Alexander Graham Bell. Why return again and again?

A wise Jedi once warned, “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”

Hate crimes and speech does exist on the campus. A lot of Deaf people had been suffering.  Thank you, Master Yoda! That would become of healthy Gallaudet!

May the Force be with you!
