RID got Humpriezed

Registry of the Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) already boasts the biggest hearing privileges, that would guarantee newest CEO for RID, Joey Trapani one of the biggest flops ever to walk around.

Just for kicks, Trapani had only one year or even less in interpreting experience, and yet got RID’s highest position: CEO through a shoddy reputation that often overlooks his power as a white man with red-hot hearing privileges. Oh, he’s Children of Deaf Adults (CODA)—pffft! I do not care if he is CODA. So what? Don’t get me wrong, there are some cool CODAs and there are some not very cool CODAs.

Let’s get serious here. How could RID allow hearing privileges and oppress Deaf community? The cloak dagger continues. People are allowed to help others and it does not matter who it is. If it is their own, they are comfortable in then that is it.

The major issue of Audism exists in all of us, even RID would go into complete denial and regardless of what and who we are. The regardless of language oppression is what the RID apart and what made the RID being differed from Deaf community. RID had failed to address the underlying causes of Audism and hearing privileges and leaves Deaf community without a guidance to move forward. RID refuses to identify the roots of language hegemony. Deaf community does not need to deal with status quo.

CODA and with only a year in freelance interpreting experience suffers numerous misinterpretations—deliberate confounding, irreversible misunderstanding can be very costly and burdensome for Deaf community, and Deaf people have personally experienced them somewhere in their life.

What really binds the Deaf together is their culture—the language and the ideas they have in common. Knowledge of cultural forms within the Deaf community is necessary in sociological concerns.

Since RID is essentially important for Deaf community, particularly in its history stages. Willard Willow wrote in 1932, “Schools have a culture that is definitely their own. There are, in the school, complex rituals of personal relationships, a set of folkways, mores, and irrational sanctions, a moral code based upon them.”

RID is not a world of its own. It is not even a world. But because RID is in the world, because it is affected by situations, and because it orients itself comprehensively in those situations, RID had something to teach, RID has offered something to bring Deaf community to higher learning of interpreting. Well, that is something to think about.

In the light of RID’s failure to hold community accountability, it is time to boycott RID. It is time for interpreters to get their money back and revoke their RID memberships.

CEO Joey Trapani and the board president, Melvin Walker, need to resign. CODA and hearing privileges do not belong well in Deaf community. They both ignited the golden age of Audism and the dominance of hearing privileges of their namesake of ignorance, which furnished RID toward the notion of educational proof and has been thrown into the mind of Deaf community since. Hearing privileges–not cool.

Isn’t Deaf community exactly the right place to exchange and debate differing concerns? Perhaps RID has lost its professionalism and respect. RID got Humpriezed. In reference to Tom Humphries, the coinage of Audism. Deaf community should not be oppressed in the name of Audism. Deaf community is a minority of one, they deserve better. RID should be Deaf-centered, Deaf-oriented, and Deaf-controlled.

Why Registry of the Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Allow Language Hegemony?

RID-Logo1.jpg

Hearing privileges is very serious topic in Deaf community. The world is heavily hearing population. There are hearing people who has been mocking Deaf people down their necks and distinguish between hearing and Deaf when it concerns the history, culture, and politics of “hearing” anywhere in the world. Examining the facts might help you realize there is no apples-to-apples comparison and there is no straw that will break the camel’s back and that implementing hearing privileges is unacceptable.

In a society in which hearing people with power, for example, a finalist to be CEO for Registry of the Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), is encouraging “hearing privileges”–without any knowledge of ASL, Deaf culture, and what it is to understand Deaf-centric philosophy. Do Deaf people really have to accept their growing cultural decrease because whether it comes to the sense of social Darwinism that is being promoted by ignorance?

The root of RID since it has founded in 1964, is to understand and respect that Deaf people comes FIRST. When RID CEO search, one of the finalist, a hearing finalist, it is the biggest mistake of all—-to oppress Deaf people. It is unconstitutional, shaming, humiliation, and persecution-oriented hearing privilege control list below Deaf people’s intelligence and experience. Education, standards, excellence? Hmm.

RID Search Committee is immature to allow the hearing privilege to continue chipping away at Deaf people’s most cherished legal protections and freedoms that Deaf people once had—all in the name of “pursuit of happiness” at RID. Whatever it means. It is clear that RID are devolving into large segment of allowing language hegemony in Deaf community that has no business having the power to undermine Deaf people for any reason because they simply lack discipline, common sense, and the ability to realize how other areas of their life impact their behaviors.

RID has nothing to address because it would be an admission along with a problem to face with Audism. They operate behind secret interpretations. You have just got to love hearing privileges what RID is all about today. Once Deaf people engineer a revolution to challenge oppressive tactics, people with hearing privileges will always leave the most vulnerable Deaf people unprotected, so they can undermine them.

That is how RID is justified. Again, when a hearing finalist for  RID CEO, Deaf people cannot “defend” themselves, heavily regulate and restrict them in all means. Shakespeare once wrote, “Brevity is the soul of wit”–thus a hearing finalist with ZERO knowledge about ASL, how interpreting world works, how ASL affect Deaf community each day, does not pay attention and time to listen.

Something is wrong with the picture. One of two finalists for RID CEO who is Deaf who holds Ph.D, and Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI), truly stands for which is liberty and justice for all and history has taught us that any promise of security and prosperity from powerful hearing privileges ends the same way: suffer and humiliation. This is the real epidemic out there that needs to be addressed.

Is that why RID is being the “New Invisible Hand?”

new-invisible-hand.png

There are series of questions that needs to be addressed. What does it mean to be “hearing”? Are “hearing” people considerably different from us? Do they learn how to be “hearing?” Or do they know they are named “hearing?” How different are the Deaf from “hearing” people? What are criteria of being “hearing?” What is a radically new understanding of what it means to be “hearing?” Deaf people are indeed different!

RID allows a hearing person with zero knowledge of Deaf life is one of the greatest frauds ever perpetrated against Deaf people because it is based on fiction, myth, and false assumptions. This is clearly unconstitutional and vindictive punishment.

Should Deaf Film Festival Run By Hearing Privileges?

Do you think it is fair for hearing privileges to be in charge of Deaf film festival?

Open Your Eyes: Audism Talking

CzNhfS8UcAAx3pX.jpg

I need to admit that it is not easy for me to write this. When you know someone who is a sound-oriented professor, who also “inspires” Deaf people, is extremely rare to see. Deaf students at Gallaudet University are referred to as the future of Deaf community, but without support and opportunities, some fall through the cracks. I am questioning a critical examination done by hearing privileges.

Now, more than ever, we, the Deaf must make a priority to share their experiences to challenge the issue of Audism. To see Deaf people being oppressed invisibility do not have the ground to discuss Audism when hearing people are given higher privileges to talk and use their voice. Is Audism, an invisibility cloak around Deaf people at Gallaudet University?

The state of being Deaf continues to be in the state of an object that cannot be seen. It does not take an expert to understand the detrimental effects that Audism are hurting Deaf people’s well being. From the public standpoint, Audism has provided a serious social problem in Deaf community including Gallaudet University to the point that it affects the way Deaf people learn and thrive.

When Deaf people receive positive academic experience, they should not fear for the oppression from a professor who is hearing, it undoubtedly has a huge effect on the success of Deaf students and Deaf educators alike.

The fact remains that Audism, so easily targeted as uninformed and misguided are becoming the stronger group that would lead the future. How do you feel about someone who used human voice with hearing spouse/partner and refused to use sign language in front of Deaf people? It is not the first time.

Audism Unveiled, Audism: Exploring the Metaphysics of Oppression, Audism and Deaf-Gainseemed promising to me when I first read the book, I found a powerful statement: “The road less traveled, however, is still a road and is becoming more and more traveled as time goes on……the Deaf community faced the fact that the hegemony of the “voice” and “speaking” was precisely what they wanted to ‘speak out’ against.”—Introduction: Open Your Eyes: Deaf Studies Talking

Scenario one: Two hearing people walk into Gallaudet University, sit down, speaks with their voice and is allowed to oppress Deaf people and use the power of hearing privileges. Outcome: Audism.

Multiple reports of Audism occur on Gallaudet University campus. Outcome: Audism. No action against hearing people.

Scenario two: Two Deaf people walk into Gallaudet University, sit down, signs to each other and the outcome is unknown. Think about it.

Over the past decade when I read many books, watched presentations, lectures, and workshops about Audism even I had given my own lectures about Audism few times have changed my life and complete the cultural competency and inclusion. It is best to learn from Deaf people who experience Audism themselves.

bcd47269019b711b95997bf420203763.jpg

The world’s only Deaf Studies Department—-where did Audism begin? Audism begins and ends with language. That is how it is examined and discussed. Would the chronicle of higher education deny the existence and evidence of Audism because it has never heard Audism before? It can better understand the resistance of the Deaf if it understands the critical events of Audism and other oppression are very much part of language hegemony that supports the power of hearing privileges. Ignoring Audism is unconscious bias. Outcome? You guess.

The question, is what is the effect of Audism on Gallaudet campus? Vulnerability? Is it the vulnerability of Deaf people being oppressed by hearing privileges? Isn’t Audism a human resource to oppress Deaf people’s health and mind? The problem, however, Audism has never taken a clear position enough at Gallaudet University.

How Mental Health Endangered Deaf Community

rulesforturningstressintosuccess.jpg

Let’s discuss about the mental health problem in Deaf community. April is the month of National Mental Health Awareness. It is also National Counseling Awareness Month, and Stress Awareness Month.

The mental health system in hearing world is arguably the front-burner issue it has been crafted for Shock Doctrine style that the failure has been forgotten. Meanwhile, Deaf people who have been neglected in the hands of hearing counseling community remains an obstacle for Deaf community. Mental health is one of the most challenging problems in Deaf community. It may be a long-term treatment site of last resort.

It is a trust that is no longer warranted from confidentiality. The role of hearing privileges has played in these and other oppressive environment has largely been downplayed by the hearing privileges.

The governing philosophy of an oppressor in Deaf community to continue ignorance against Deaf community is dangerous and ineffective mental health system could be lifted straight from the Hippocratic Oath: First, Do No Harm. Then, Second, Do What Works.

Putting Deaf people before hearing privileges overcoming the barriers to recovery. What is “recovery”?

Today’s laissez-faire oppressive climate and broken counseling and psychological services. Unfortunately, hearing counseling system compromised by lies and denial, and the taxpayers and political leaders are being invisible by ignorance, preventable deaths, and the need for counseling for Deaf community is noted.

Who else would understand Deaf-centered counseling? Deaf-centered counseling is the hope that will bring better compassion to our understanding of a mental health system how it works.

Counseling for the Deaf is far more than being a member of hearing community who has shown apathy or incompetence is involved in creating a mental health field that Deaf community is a shamble. Since, it is National Counseling Awareness Month.

Let’s take a look this way. There are many, many, many hearing counselors who cannot afford ASL interpreters around the nation. Deaf members are referred to as the lack of mental health awareness, but without support and opportunities, and there were thousands of times, has fallen through the cracks. Many times, Deaf people were hurt when they are being neglected for counseling. That builds great stress. When they are being denied, too many times is too much just like this quote on left-side below:

e4dadc3d881c49fafed3ba91b92a13ea.jpg

Deaf-centered counselors would able to develop support skills, life skills, and thinking skills along with the Deaf core philosophy. Deaf members who would learn from Deaf-centered counselors taught how to be mentored and also be a mentor, too.

It was all because of these connections and help them to reach ability to advocate for themselves that they receive Deaf-centered counseling when they did while many Deaf members are being denied in hearing counseling world.

When a Deaf person seeking counseling is being denied in hearing world due to the fact that they cannot afford ASL interpreters has plunged themselves for ignorance. I deeply hope that Deaf members should not demonized for state of being Deaf and still misrepresented in the counseling world. It is extremely important that Deaf members should never denied for their well-being and become a better person.

Stress is the powerful force that influences their bodies, lives, and mental health. How can they deal with stress? Most importantly, how many Deaf people will they deny because they have denied counseling and cannot be afforded by hearing professionals? When I saw this picture, Pac-Man as hearing counseling system who denied Deaf people services will always have hard time chasing Deaf souls away because they hurt the most.

Gallaudet University: Audism Still Exist in 2018?

After reading this book tonight, we need to bring up critical thinking and how we can challenge Audism and give Deaf students the quality of higher learning in ASL and Deaf-centered environment at Gallaudet University.
