My First Linocut Art!

IMG_4004.JPG

I am a great believer in numbers, my first love in education was math. So, I developed my first linocut art to show that the numbers are critical to us, recollection and validation of their lives in Deaf community how much American sign Language and Signed Languages around the world–that the effect of 1880 has shown Oralism a validity of lies.

MDCXX= 1620 and that was the year where a ‘proclamation compelled Juan Pablo de Bonet to create and publish the first book on sign language in 1620’ (Butterworth & Flodin, 1995)

CCLX= 260 years later…….

MDCCCLXXX= 1880: All in the mirrors Deaf community wake up in the morning on second Saturday of September to experience the mother of language hegemony: bigotry destroyed their sign languages for political gain. Soon, I will present another linocut art (Deaf theme) that will present in a math sequence. Hopefully I will make it more interesting! I love art therapy! Even a year later today would tell a lot.

In Our Own Eyes: Under the Moons of Phobos and Deimos

summer_evenings____by_mbalenhle.jpg

Champ Art by Mbalenhle!

Apologies for any evening ruined, did you know that Alexander Graham Bell (AGBell) became the biggest political contributor to develop a secret patent to demonize Deaf people? As I write, the post of AGBell’s bones unfurled before me and stretched since his death appears in the same year, 1922 when Ireland signed a treaty to an agreement about peace and created a national flag, and it has revealed itself to be more than writing. His death in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, a small island in Eastern Canada, has sparked the finest educational oppression establishments in America and its neighbor, Canada to make so sure that Deaf people are forgotten.

AGBell do not want you to know about his other hobby. I have written it because I believe the truth is necessary to stop his hate practices towards Deaf people today. He was deeply troubled for writing Memoir Upon the Formation of a Deaf Variety of the Human Race in 1883 and had profoundly caused serious problems with human dignity, mortality, adherence to ethnical standards, and professionalism.

In that infamous speech in 1883, when AGBell found a way to destroy the life of Deaf people into the land of America, his theories had been riddled with problems.

Let’s follow with history what happened today on August 11th almost 140 year ago. “In 1877, the two moons of Mars were discovered by Asaph Hall, an American astronomer. He named them Phobos and Deimos.” (link: http://www.on-this-day.com/onthisday/thedays/alldays/aug11.htm)

Asaph Hall was father for one of the last babies for Percival Hall who later become president of Gallaudet University. Percival was an important figure in Gallaudet’s moons; he knew that the moons were taught to protect Deaf people for its exceptional education—especially at Gallaudet University. “Phobos is named after the Greek god, Phobos, a son of Ares (Mars) and Aphrodite (Venus) which was the personification of Horror.” [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phobos_(moon)]

The personification of Horror reminds me of AGBell whose its soul appearing on Mother Earth into darkness of his words, “the idea they [deaf people] are dangerous, morose, ill-tempered…he is sometimes looked upon as a sort of monstrosity, to be stared at and avoided” [Bell, Memoir, 43.] meets the twin brother of Phobos: Deimos.

In a definition about Deimos, “In Greek, Deimos was the twin brother of Phobos and personified terror. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deimos_(moon)] The personification of Terror. AGBell terrorize Deaf community by greatest language bigotry possible and tricked them well for the last 100 years+ making him the world’s worse terrorist ever. The same year, Asaph discovered those moons, “Alexander Graham Bell demonstrated how to call long-distance by calling The Boston Globe.” in 1877.[http://www.poynter.org/2015/today-in-media-history-in-1877-alexander-graham-bell-made-the-first-long-distance-phone-call-to-the-boston-globe/319227/] a first long distance call.

I wonder if there are any one who worked for Boston Globe had personal connections with AGBell that time and helped spread lies about Deaf people in Bostonian newspaper for political favors.

As In this American society, it is time to be aware of his proclivities. The silence in Deaf community has been a tradition for so long that needs to be broken at all costs. Hate crimes is here to stop and would need your help as part of community accountability. Is hate crimes driving Deaf community apart? Why or why not?

These days, Deaf community struggle to each other a lot with their hands—mashing out over 136 years ago from infamous 1880 Milan Resolution. Are Hate crimes not the first human oppression blamed for ruining personal discourse and common courtesy among Deaf people today? A British newspaper, Chambers’s Journal quoted in 1899, “It does not improve the temper, and it engenders a feverishness in the ordinary concerns of life which does not make for domestic happiness and comfort.”

Is it time for Gallaudet University to tell Alexander Graham Bell Association for Deaf and Hard of Hearing to move away from Deaf people ——very long distance call…..leave them and let them heal from educational oppression they had endured. The moons are our shadows and we are no longer known as ‘long distance call’ to AGBell’s headquarters anymore. Lies, enough, lies.

With the discovery of Phobos and Deimos, words have such power that they can bring respect or they can bring disrespect, as is shown by AGBell that has referred himself as a terrorist and had alienated Deaf people, and his words could never help us concentrate on our own nature. His words are associated with the charging of ongoing oppression.

This is another crucial point to make about words, which we do not wish to talk about? However, we need to talk about our nature of being Deaf. What is wrong with that? One of the reasons we need to focus our nature of being Deaf and believe in—even when it has been demonstrated to us—is that AGBell made it happen by losing our connection to the nature of being Deaf. The words of AGBell’s expressed enough hate, would be unlikely to hold true for most Deaf people today, even at Gallaudet University, for the way we think of nature has changed.

After reading the book, In Our Own Hands: Essays in Deaf History 1780-1970 by co-editors, Brian H. Greenwald and Joseph J. Murray, I decided to share my thoughts what I had read one of the chapters that caught my eyes, Revisiting Memoir Upon the Formation of a Deaf Variety of the Human Race: Alexander Graham Bell and Deaf Autonomy by its own editor and an author, Brian H. Greenwald. I respectfully disagreed with his views that AGBell was a good man with strong morals and a “life savior” for Deaf community.

This post is dedicated to Mr. Greenwald and remind him to revisit the growing pains what AGBell actually left Deaf people intellectually alone for the rest of their lives.  Did AGBell deserve as an icon the way he cared about Deaf community? Perhaps, it is time to think of nature as the state of being Deaf as something outside and separate from AGBell’s lies. With AGBell’s hearing tests, his practices are not conductive to understand Deaf people’s pursuit of happiness.

deimos_phobos.jpg

The moons, any word that is connected to it should be Greek. Thank you, Phobos and Deimos, to understand who AGBell is really about. We will carry on and be strong to remember our state of being Deaf and no more to be living in horror under the terrorist, AGBell— celebrate Phobos and Deimos’s birthday behind our eyes and our mind, ASL seems dreams of other—Deaf and no longer lost people!

AGBell—a secret society established with intention of slaying ASL is not welcomed anymore. We grow in size, strength, political clout, and wealth of ASL and……overcome hate. The burning question, what are the Deaf community perceptions of the climate and the motivations that facilitate hate crimes?

The book was worth reading and I encourage you to buy and read. Any moon is in our own eyes and reading is in our own hands.

In The Times of Butterflies: Deaf People Are Important, Too!

nicaea_icon.jpg

In a world of great creedal and human diversity, first of all, I would like to explain what creedal means. It is a noun: any system, doctrine, or formula of religious belief, as of a denomination (http://www.dictionary.com/browse/creedal). There are a great many different views about the meaning and social significance of Deaf people and butterflies.

In this post, we need to approach the sociological study of politics. We also need to approach the sociological study of Deaf people and butterflies through a conscientious effort to engage perspectives from politics and from studies based in diverse parts of the planet. In this post, it would require history, philosophy, political economy, culture studies, anthropology, politics, social ethics, Deaf studies and other fields related to the sociology of Deaf people and butterflies today and tomorrow.

Through the truth cannot do justice to the rich variety necessary for a comprehensive global approach to the topic, we need to focus on contextual ideal always in mind: endeavor to study Deaf people and butterflies in global perspective. The key is to try to include a wide scope and to remember that our own social locations influence our understandings—including the limits of our understandings and consciousness.

We have much to gain by studying why the butterflies are disappearing around mother Earth. Please note that the butterflies are also Deaf. Yes, they are all Deaf! Having living in Deaf community, remembering experiences studying Deaf discourses, recalling adventures in American Sign Language (ASL) across America and Canada, thinking about Deaf people how important they are to us today including my beloved Pacific Northwest (e.g. the notion of “salmon people”) and being deeply interested in ASL and Deaf Studies, I have strong awareness of the global reach involved in questions about the role of genocide in Deaf community today.

ASL is being marginalized in favor of Oralism and cochlear implant spearheaded by AGBell ideology, making the meaning state of being Deaf disappeared and no, it is no funny business. What happened to what we learn about Deaf Studies and analytical approaches of Deaf people, offers us the opportunity to appreciate the variety of ways that “all knowledge may be shaped by the social context of the knower”—our goal is to enrich our understandings of the social phenomenon of Deaf people. Now to the butterflies, I remember living in country in a rural Washington States on 400 acres, I would see hundreds of butterflies everywhere—they were one of the most beautiful creatures you could imagine—all in colors. I did not realize they were Deaf until my adult life—damn for hiding the truth!

The sad part is that the butterflies are not appearing in our backyards or even front yards anymore—it is not there. What happened to the complex webs of meaning and action? Nature vs. Nurture or Nature vs. Man-Made? Now above the opening paragraph: the meaning of creedal—any system, doctrine, or formula of religious belief, as of a denomination. Any system: man-made cochlear implants, oralism, or even doctrine as in oralism in religious discourses that believes that Deaf people should be part of formula of religious belief to wipe out ASL and Deaf Culture and turn into hearing-dominated system.

I mean, look at this bigger picture, folks, how Oralism, cochlear implant industries and hearing-dominated society relate to: economic systems, social institutions, cultural patterns, moral arguments, divergent world-views and the collective psyches of Deaf people. We need to challenge and become stronger to do so by examining and discussing: the parallel between butterflies and Deaf people being slaughtered into human pleasure.

Now point out to the religious believers: they believe that Deaf people need to be wiped out, for example, EPHPHATHA— becoming so passionately held points of view (various creeds and the voices of their believers), poignant personal stories that connect Deaf people into cosmic, and sociological (cross-disciplinary often) analyses of genocide and society—with a particular eye for comparative and global perspectives.

The butterflies and Deaf people—in America I live, Deaf people I know in Canada, and other parts of world, their spirit of freedom is fast becoming as blinkered as the oppressors by politics and fear. We all should not live like this—ever. From my Sociology background, I have learned to simply protect Deaf community—the one I live in. Their reactions by attempting to kill the butterflies and Deaf people are understandable since they suffer the NIMB (Not in my Backyard) syndrome—an element of the oppressed.

As I argue in my blog post, certainty without evidence is necessarily divisive and dehumanizing. In fact, respect for evidence and rational argument is what makes peaceful cooperation possible. As human beings, Deaf people are human beings, not human doings, we live in a perpetual choice between conversation and violence; what, apart from a fundamental willingness to be reasonable, can guarantee that we will keeping to one another?

Deaf Community: Hate Crime as a Social Problem

hate-crime-banner.jpg

“History, despite it’s wrenching pain, cannot be unlived/But if faced with courage need not be lived again.”- Maya Angelo

From the local to the global, debates over hate crimes in Deaf community-what they are and what we should do about them–are all around us. A close examination of these debates reveals that hate crimes are not simply academic challenges, but social, political, economic, and even Deaf culture, as well. Perhaps nowhere is this complexity more evident than in current discussions over the meaning and practice of “hate crimes”.

Hate crime as a broad introduction to the interdisciplinary field of sociology and society interactions. We need to adopt a sociological lens to consider the causes, consequences, and responses to hate crimes–from global worries over political and legal change to local controversies over educational use and development. In my work, I will not be focusing on the political dimensions of issues per se.

Rather, I will examine how different social structures, processes and belief systems shape how hate crimes in Deaf community arise and get defined; how Deaf community experience and respond to these challenges; and how policy debates over what to do about them unfold. For decades and decades, hate crimes have used what they call “active measures” to destabilize Deaf community today and tomorrow.

We need to turn those tools to defeat them, through in that process that for example, Alexander Graham Bell (AGBell) Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing actually violated plenty of federal laws when they target Deaf community. It is rule number one of the hate crime: they will be caught.

AGBell is something that we have been for many years. Why do we want to claim our intellectual life? Well, let’s look at hate crime dimensions that we suffer from. We looked our across the educational landscape and saw this oppression practice and thought, “OK, what about American Sign Language (ASL) today?” a broad number of AGBell followers would say, “You know, let’s demonize them for the fuck of it” and this comment does explicitly refer to oppress Deaf people as in hate crimes. Serious.

It does because AGBell will expect money and lies with immediate solution. Deaf people and my name will be in it–what I care the most is if Deaf people had experienced hate crimes even when they do not know that they actually experience hate crime, then Deaf people will be always oppressed, too. You know, today is the day after AGBell’s death in 1922, he may be forgotten but at the same time, he must not be forgotten for what he had done.

After all, That is how AGBell as a narcissist think. He was basically defective in the brain. Broken.

Deaf people will be always target for academic freedom–ASL and the state of being Deaf. It is a branch of human ignorance. What should we make of it? Can Deaf people point to a greater language hegemony than we experience hate crimes? Is the difference between ASL and hate crimes just a matter of what AGBell or any particular group of human beings says it is? Soon, you will see something powerful….

AGBell’s America: Who Would You Be?

AGBellPooped 2.jpeg

Remember that shithead? Art done by Zeppe Art. Bravo!

Bread-and-buttered for the first 23 years in Scotland, Alexander Graham Bell (A.G. Bell) relocated to Canada. In 2002, he was mistakenly credited as the “father” of telephone; it was later discovered that A.G. Bell was not the inventor; he had only been the first to claim the patient. There also exists plenty of research pointing to the fact that A.G. Bell stole the telephone idea from Italian inventor Antonio Santi Giuseppe Meucci.

In 1890, Bell founded the American Association to Promote the Teaching of Speech to the Deaf (AAPTSD), later the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AGBADHH) in Washington, D.C; Bell was a renowned manipulator of others, especially those close to him — his Deaf mother, Eliza Grace Symonds and his Deaf wife, Mabel Gardiner Hubbard were two examples.

Bell was a champion of eugenics (selective breeding), and served as the chair of the board of scientific advisors for the Eugenics Record Office. He also served as honorary president for the Second International Eugenics Conference a year before his death.

One hundred and thirty-two years later, AGBADHH is still attacking the Deaf community, claiming that oralism is the only way to educate Deaf children. In this same 132-year span, America has had 24 presidents.

Audism, and hatred of Deaf culture and ASL, has been a hard fact since the Second International Congress on Education of the Deaf held in Milan, Italy, when the majority of hearing attendees voted to ban sign language from Deaf education — largely due to A.G. Bell’s efforts. On that day, he became the happiest man in the world.

For the first 20 years after the conference, 90% of Deaf teachers were removed from their positions, replaced by hearing teachers who utilized the oralist method. A.G. Bell was responsible for the greatest fraud, and the biggest case of language bigotry, in Deaf Education that continues today.

AGBADHH followers have committed countless acts that could easily be labeled as hate crimes. But standing on the souls of A.G. Bell survivors — there are thousands, if not millions, of them — while trying to find souls they once knew to remember the pursuit of happiness, is repulsive to normal people.

Why would anyone doubt the veracity of AGBADHH’s claims? After all, who would want to “remain” Deaf, if following the organization’s misguided perspectives? A.G. Bell supporters have constantly stooped to the lowest common denominator to continue AGBell’s legacy of hatred toward Deaf people. His supporters constantly mock sign language, demean people who sign, and undertake efforts to make oralism the only method in schools again. The list goes on.

We — the Deaf community — need to depend on each other to heal. In healthy discourse, we must not lose our sight of the value of ASL — a human right that is not only beneficial, but also absolutely vital for Deaf people’s well being.  AGBADHH supporters have been taught to be attached to Bell’s original anger and make sure they continue to dwell on or recycle this anger.

Today, Deaf people — those who sign, and many who also speak — are united in full force to protect the community. The mere existence of AGBADHH has caused a cognitive dissonance among the Deaf community. The organization has promoted un-American values, especially among those who sign.

Just take a look at what outgoing AGBADHH president Meredith Sugar said in April 2016:

“It is our hope to dispel the myths about deafness and spread the word that deaf children can hear & talk. What it means to be ‘deaf’ has changed.”

That is what Alexander Graham Bell’s America looked like to him. Bell and his followers have done unimaginable damage, and left in its trail an astounding number of survivors still struggling to recover. If you are part of AGBADHH and trying to get out, it’s not your fault. Simply turn to those who have been there — and discover the truth.

AGBell’s New War Zone: ASL

As three major strikes in 90 days, shows that Alexander Graham Bell (AGBell) do attack beyond the hate group terrorizing Deaf community are taking authority more frequently and often with hate crime from its leaders.

In his Quaestio Quodilibetalis XX1. 14, Saint Thomas Aquinas replies to the question, “Utrum veritas sit fortior inter vinum et regem et mulierem”–in other words, whether the power of truth is more potent, more persuasive, and more constricting than the authority of a king, the influence of wine……(Umberto Eco, On Literature)

The first strike, “It is our hope to dispel the myths about deafness and spread the word that deaf children can hear & talk. What it means to be ‘deaf’ has changed.” The second strike, “Just still astounds me that, by some, ASL is seen as a ‘human right,’ even when SOUND isn’t”, and third strike: “As a proverb states, no one is as deaf as those will not listen or those who will not embrace progress. ”

What types of framing processes do hate groups adopt? Related, what are the consequences of framing hate groups and the collective action frames that they produce? With these questions in mind, we need to take a long look is on how AGBell has framed the problem of violence against Deaf community for using ASL, respectively, as well as hate crimes.

Many Deaf people have been emboldened by the offensive hate rhetoric in the society. Think about Deaf mainstreaming students or Oral students everyday in their classroom who would get harassed by teachers. All these years, even in Meredith Sugar’s final speech, I wonder across America, have the teachers noted an increase in bullying, harassment, and intimidation of Deaf students whose have been the verbal targets of AGBell’s trail? We had seen and treated as non-talking animals. Whatever directive it might be, it was wrong to rough them up under any circumstance whatsoever just because they use ASL is uncivil and unnecessary.

We do not need to see AGBell again! We the Deaf have led lives of compulsion and necessity within an unforgiving, if not hostile, hearing social hierarchy in environment where ASL has been marginalized and visual modes of communication forever speculated. AGBell has became a state of official denial the fact that ASL does make a huge difference. It is the community of Deaf people being constantly misinterpreted by AGBell that subscribes to its philosophy of all languages and modes of communication except ASL.

We deplore efforts to allow AGBell denigrate ASL, to seek to explain the world in highest terms, and to look outside for truth. We believe that ASL can contribute to the betterment of human life. We cultivate the arts of ASL and compromise as a means of resolving differences and achieving mutual understanding. We will always nourish ASL for reason and compassion.

Tucker-Maxon Oral School: The Liar Ball

IMG_3253.JPG

“The Alexander Graham Bell Association publishes a book detailing Tucker-Maxon’s conversational development program, Blueprint for Developing Conversational Competence.”

Whether you are thinking about how much importance to the efforts of the ASL story to intertwine the history of sign language being deprived away from language and human rights, no mountain is too high to climb when it comes to create the shows and exhibits that touch and stir our passions to suggest the imitation, of say, ASL as the best factual source for the human communication.

Recently this weekend, I was shocked—completely shocked to find that my name was not printed in Tucker-Maxon Oral School (TMOS), 60 years anniversary yearbook. My mother and my father took me there everyday from Monday to Friday in 1976 for two years in a muscle car, Chevy Chevelle 454 V-8—my father’s dream car. First, I will share my YouTube video and then make sure to read my second link, “Oralism Stole My Father’s Baby” below. Never mind, I will add all the links I wrote about TMOS below after all.

They both realized that the gas was very expensive—driving more than 30 miles driving to another state one way and they both decided that it would be best thing for my father to sell his dream car for VW Bug. My father had no choice and he was so heart-broken to let it go because TMOS told my parents that Oralism would be a gold-star philosophy and make me an All-Star student to please Alexander Graham Bell ideology.

IMG_3255.JPG

He is about to become Richard….

One day, my mother decided to come by and surprise me, then my mother saw Alice Davis and Chris Solan in the same room and found me “cuffed” with six-pack rings while Dr. “Bruce” Wallace was leading my mother where I was with a smile. That was the last time my body was suckered away from TMOS ever since and drove home and told my father what happened. They were clearly hurt—they were both 22 and 24 years old that time. Poor parents. My father was beyond pissed!

IMG_3288.JPG

No wonder why he created the Liar Ball!

I wondered why my name was not in archives at TMOS, none of pictures were ever shown that I existed in the oppressive halls—even though I was featured in the Oregonian newspaper, December 9th, 1976 with my parents and the audiologist that was responsible for the lies—her name was Star Leonard. It was taken at Tucker-Maxon Oral School. I became a student that day.

jt1976.jpg

With my own name that have been attacked over emotional response to abuse and language deprivation like TMOS did for incommensurate amount of time because of political tail wind that blows in favor of Oralism—an emotional but not a rational reaction for AGBell lies. I can understand why a current NAD president, a star pupil at TMOS for 12 years, told me at Georgia Association of the Deaf conference last June 2015, asked his TMOS friend if he remembered me. He said, “no”—why? I was not featured in that yearbook wiping off the truth. Now I understand why.

After I was taken out of TMOS, I get slapped with a label on my forehead and tell me that I was a human failure when “Oralism” success stories, but the labels kills my chance with my own human right and stop language deprivation. What a deal!

So, this is my story to shake things up a bit and challenges the current wisdom on this topic and will continue to do so for the benefit of preserving ASL debate. After all, I was overlooked and dismissed as “never heard of” or nonexistent. This is the message that I had been waiting for a strong, clear voice of anti-hate authority. Not that TMOS is simply an act of hiding language deprivation and abuse, they must account for all the available evidence. The feeling of futility and sense of invisibility go beyond AGBell lies dismissing my civil experience as an AGBell survivor.

I told my mother what happened last night and she was heartbroken and understood the futility and invisibility as well because my mother protected me. Thank you, Mom—I love you!

Again, no mountain is too high to climb when it comes to TRUTH—it is sad day for AGBell survivors and a powerful reminder that TMOS still practices a lot of hatred today and tomorrow.

Isn’t life a bitch?
